A Message from the Grand Knight

As this is written, Boyd’s 110th Columbian Year is drawing to a close.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the role you have played in keeping Boyd Council viable.   That being said, it would be a mistake to rest on our laurels.  Once again, I use this space to restate my challenge to the membership to contribute your skills and talents to improve the Council continually.   As I approach my third and final year as your Grand Knight, I continue to view the utilization of our membership's talent as my primary task and, frankly, my most formidable challenge.

This edition of the Unit contains news about many upcoming events, including Council elections on this coming Thursday evening.  I hope to see you there, and look forward with confidence to our working together in the upcoming Columbian Year.

I wish you and your families a happy and healthy summer!

Fraternally,                                                                Christopher C. Farley

Election Knight

The Nominations Committee met in May to devise a slate of officers for the 2008-2009 Columbian Year.  It should be noted that these are only recommendations and that members in good standing may be nominated from the floor for office on election night, June 26th at 7:30 PM at the Council.  The recommendations are as follows:

Treasurer                                 Rich Condon

Outside Guard                                    Paul Riccio

All members in good standing are both welcome and encouraged to attend the elections.

Beginner’s Luck

Late April saw the return of Boyd to the historic refurbished oval at Yonkers Raceway.  Thirty members and their families shared dinner and an evening of racing thrills.  It should be noted that the senior member of Boyd, Ken McLaughlin, cashed a winning ticket on the race named for Boyd in his first ever visit to Yonkers Raceway!   We look forward to seeing Ken and many others members on our next trip to Yonkers this autumn.

Raindrops Keep Falling

A wet spring has played havoc with outdoor events far and wide, and the New York Chapter Softball League is no exception.  The good news is that Dead End boasts the League’s only undefeated record, and the Boyd contingent occupies second place, its only two blemishes coming at the hands of its Council brothers.  All members are welcome at the final regular season meeting of our two clubs on Monday July 7th at 6:45 at Pelham Bay Park.

Final Farewell

The Council will be making its seventh and final annual trip to Shea Stadium on Saturday evening July 26th.  The opposition for the 7:30 PM contest will be the St. Louis Cardinals.  The price of $45 includes round trip bus transportation from the Council, a ticket, and refreshments at the Council prior to the game.  Anyone interested

in attending this event may contact Chris Farley at (914) 844-7432.

We’re Baaack!

We are happy to announce the return of Boyd’s venerable Keep On Hopin’ Open golf outing.  Tee time is noon on Friday September 12th at Dunwoodie Golf Course in Yonkers.  The price of $100 includes golf cart, green fees, and an extensive 19th hole at the Council.  It is requested that due to the intimate nature of our home, members limit guests to a maximum of one.  Thanks to Rich Condon for taking the initiative and reviving an integral part of Boyd history.

Save the Date

Boyd Council’s best outdoor party, Oldtimers’ Day, will be held at Indian Field in Woodlawn on Saturday afternoon, September 20th at 2:00.  All are welcome to join us for softball, volleyball, and good cheer.  Don’t forget to mark the calendar.

Daze and Knights

And they’re off: Andrea and Jack Cuggy live and in person at the Belmont Stakes, our own GK owner of a longshot win ticket on that race, Jim Casey cashing fat exacta at Monmouth, and Brian Powers cashing a trifecta ticket of great interest to the IRS…Best wishes to Keith Bresciani and fiancée Lisa as they prepare for July nuptials.  Multiple Council members defy odds and return safely from Keith’s 4 day bachelor party—in Costa Rica!...Boyd’s Mike Serratore’s amazing consecutive inning streak continuing unabated in its 4th year…Music to our ears: Bowmans and Mahers prepping for Jones Beach Chicago-Doobie Brothers concert, Farley brothers off to Boston for Pearl Jam gig, and Bob and Kathy Ellis raving over Atlantic City Stevie Wonder show…A hearty welcome to Boyd’s three newest members, Nick Bizzaro, Justin Den Herder, and Pat O’Connor…Kudos to Brian Casey, Steve Carlson, Dennis Wentzler, Matt Ernau, and Kevin O’Brien after winning championship at Giant Stadium in touch football tourney benefiting cerebral palsy research…Get well wishes to Eugene Leonard and Ken McLaughlin on the mend following minor setbacks…Bacardi stock soaring after Morty Vaughan’s beloved Boston Celtics cop NBA crown…Comin’ and goin’: Rosemary and Nancy Farley back from Rome trip, and Gilmores off on mid-July County Mayo excursion… Boyd softball simply not the same without grit and wit of retired sixteen year mainstay Brian Curley…
